Frequently Asked Questions

Why another set of initials?
The Medicare Secondary Payer Act contains requirements for lien resolution, submission of MSAs, knowledge of rated age and structured settlement issues and new reporting requirements. The CMSP represents training and credentials in all areas of MSPA.

Is this a competitor to the National Alliance of Medicare Set Aside Professionals?
No, the CMSP program is training in the fulfillment of the requirements of all aspects of the Medicare Secondary Payer Act.

Will the CMSP program be involved in lobbying, like MARC?
No, CMSP is a training program.

There seem to be a lot of NAMSAP people involved in the CMSP program, is this part of NAMSAP?
No, members and officers of NAMSAP act as faculty for many providers of training related to the Medicare Secondary Payer Act. The inclusion of NAMSAP members as faculty is consistent with the stated goals of NAMSAP.

What comprises the training for the CMSP designation?
Two days of class instruction, completion of preparation materials, sitting for an exam (follows classroom instruction), completion of comprehensive practicum and conditional payment under Secondary Payer Act and evaluation of submission.

Isn't this just submitting a MSA as a practicum?
The practicum addresses liens, reporting, structured settlement, timetable, agenda and an MSA. This is a comprehensive approach to compliance with the MSP Act.

Who provides the accreditation?
The CMSP program was designed by a national group of Medicare Secondary Payer experts and is credentialed by the Louisiana Association of Self Insured Employers (LASIE).

Why is LASIE involved in CMSP?
LASIE provides a variety of accreditations in insurance and claims related topics, CMSP is an added program they credential.

Who are the faculty?

This is all so new. Why now?
Accreditation in MSAs is less than 10 years old, yet we have seen a dramatic growth in the complexity of the Medicare Secondary Payer Compliance Act. The addition of conditional payments, General Liability, Medicare liens, mandatory reporting and complex use of structured settlements has expanded the skill set necessary to provide full service to the industry and all stakeholders. The CMSP program will provide an advanced foundation of knowledge required to meet the comprehensive demands of specialty issues as the Longshore and Harbor Worker¡¯s Compensation Act (LHWCA), the Defense Base Act and the SCHIP Extension Act of 2007.
